Today I asked you about the importance of literature in and beyond the classroom. You had a chance to reflect on that question in your journals. Then we discussed our reflections in class. Here I would like you to devise a thesis statement about why the study of literature is important.
Please, please, please take some intellectual risk here. Do not restate our conversation today, do not be obvious, do not copy the submissions of others. BE YOU. This thesis should reflect what YOU think.
Remember: you will write two entries (as opposed to one big blob). One is your thesis, the other is your thoughts on a classmate's thesis. Casual register applies.

Literature is the basic element when it comes to understanding by creating a way to express one's individuality through words and enabling them to see things from a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteLiterature is the basis to the focus and imagination to the world around us including the creation of plots, social interaction with others, and reference to what has happened in the past and what is to come in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhat Meghan said is true. Literature brings us to a point sometimes where we look at something from a different angle and it helps us with analyzation.
Thesis
ReplyDeleteLiterature is history; literature is not just factual history, it is the history of the human imagination and the human point of view. Literature beyond the classroom is important because it teaches us and stimulates us to think differently with other points of view.
Response to Jason- What you said I completely agree with. Literature is the focus of imagination and social interaction. It brings us together whether parents are reading their young children books or we are listening to our friend's ghost stories around the camp fire.
ReplyDeleteLiterature is a way to show someone’s imaginations thoughts and understandings, also a way to show your intellectual side and show creativity through your own personal thoughts and ideas.

ReplyDeleteLiterature is important in life because it helps to analyze work and essays and also helps out with your social life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jack because literature is history and is the focus in imagination.
Response to Meghan:
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your thesis statement Meghan. A persons writing does show and tell a lot about their individuality. With that being said having many papers based on ones individuality does give readers and writers a wide variety of perspectives because not everyone has the same opinions. As you said in your thesis “Literature is the basic element when it comes to understanding” not only are you understanding how to be a creative individual, but understanding the many forms of writing.
Literature is the way that the world understands and communicates with each other, shows us how to look and think in new ways, and advances our knowledge.
ReplyDeleteResponse to Valerie:
ReplyDeleteYou are right, an imagination is one of the best ways to show everything about a person's personality: their creativity, intelligence, and thoughts.
Through literature, all limitations and boundaries in life can be broken, surpassed, or otherwise proven to be false; words, feelings, expressions, mistakes, questions, answers, knowledge, and imagination are found in literature, all hold infinite possibilities, and all are part of the human experience.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John
ReplyDeleteLiterature has been present all throughout history even though it might not be as advanced and persist as it is today. I agree that history has a lot to do with peoples imagination. Myths showed the imagination of people before they started to write and record things. The myths were passed from generation to generation teaching messages and guiding that current generation. They have opened people's eyes to view things and the world from a total different perspective.

ReplyDeleteResponse to Michael:
ReplyDeleteKnowledge can be advanced without literature, for example, in Math, you can make a technological advance without even communicating a word, all you need is numbers on a page.
Literature is the key element in being able to unify a civilization.
ReplyDeleteThink about it....
Declaration of Independance, Torah, Bible, Constitution.
The study of literature allows the world to view different expressions of life. Individuality is expressed in literature, all different and never the same. By studying individuality, the world can learn new ideas and relate their lives to the author.
ReplyDeleteresponse to Gio
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gio. Literature helps us communicate more effectively. If there were no literature and communication, the world would be preserved in one time period with no changes at all.
Literature helps to express one's unique ideas and in some cases, people's morals and values. In literature, one's creativity is shown and stories are shared based on adversity and experience.
ReplyDeleteI see what Valerie means when intellect can be shown through literature. With just a few play of words , a new kind of world can unravel. This then ties up with imagination. Relatively, intellect can be shown through a person's imagination.
ReplyDeleteResponse to Catherine:
ReplyDeleteI agree with Catherine when she says that "individuality is expressed in literature, all different and never the same." This is true because everyone is unique and how people respond and handle situations can be different, expressing their own individuality.
When we study literature, it helps us use our imaginations to find similarities between characters and each other. It also helps us as individuals to connect and relate to others.
ReplyDeleteResponse to Lauren:
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren when she said "In literature, one's creativity is shown and stories are shared based on adversity and experience." That is true because creativity stands out with one's own experiences, which also help us relate with others.
Literature allows any person to be an individual in their ideas, speech, and creativity. Heartfelt life stories are shared and knowledge expanded;without literature the human race would be a dull, unempathetic form of creatures.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michelle. Nothing is wrong in literature with the exception of a historical novel. Opinions can be expressed, and if someone does not agree they can write an argument against it. Everything the human race does needs words. Without words no one would ever be able to gain knnowledge and understand of how other people feel and how the world evolves and works.
ReplyDeleteLiturature is guide to help express emotions and character; a creative and simple way to share any situation, it helps individuals communicate with one another.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Meghan, Literature enables readers to see a different perspective and expresses individuality.
Literature plays a key role in people's individuality; all works of literature have a hidden message or lesson that can be analyzed or interpreted based on an individual's beliefs, morals, and values.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Valerie's thesis. Literature is a great way to express yourself and show your creativity. Through literature we are able to learn about ourselves and gain a deeper understanding of humans.
Literature is what defines us as humans; we have our own ways of interpreting ideas and by everyone having their own unique ideas, it defines our roles in the community and in history.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gio's thesis, as humans are constantly reading and inventing new technology. The skills of analyzing and thinking ahead have shaped the ideas circulating throughout the world today.
ReplyDeleteliterature can show others around them how imaginative and creative they really are, without literature we would not be able to understand some of the stories in this world
ReplyDeletei agree with what davina says about individuality, literature can give us a great oppurtunity to express ourselves and who wer really want to be

ReplyDeleteIn addition to broadening one’s vocabulary and improving his or her proper grammar, literature allows an individual to connect with or understand other issues that different people worldwide are also experiencing.
ReplyDeleteLiterature has the ability to shape the opinions and beliefs of masses of people because of the meaning and power behind the words. In past times in history there have been leaders who became such prominent citizens because of their eloquent language. I also believe that literature can change characteristics of people when a reader is inspired by characters who have gone through hard times or have achieved greatness. By reading these kinds of stories, a reader can set goals to better themselves as a person like the characters in literature have been able to do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Michelle said about literature because works of fiction-whether realistic or not-have a strong impact on what one wants to believe and what one can actually believe. Literature provides an escape to what is really going on in the world and is a natural part of the human experience to find a place of sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteLauren, your thesis was very well put. That is so true about literature allowing a person to express their creativity and ideas. I also agree with your opinion about the human race if literature was nonexistent. Everyone truly would be unempathetic, lame creatures. Thank goodness for literature huh?!?
ReplyDeleteLiterature enables us to feel different emotions and to connect on some level with a person whether it be a character in a book or a human being. Literature also provides us with life lessons, morals, and knowledge about the world around us. It allows us to say what we are really feeling and lets us be creative and speak our real inner thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI agree with lauren when she said, "literature allows an individual to connect with or understand other issues that different people worldwide are also experiencing." This is completely true because although we might be from different places literature unites us because we all have either been through or are going through what other people from different places are experiencing.
Learning and studying literature is important because it gives us the ability to communicate with others on a higher level and gives us a better understanding of all that we are as human beings, without this knowledge we would be unable to converse with others at even a rudimentary level.
ReplyDeleteI agree with davina sophia. I love to analyze literature and find the hidden meaning in a book or play write or poem and choosing honors will help me become better at that. Also literature does show who people are, the proof is inside every book I've ever picked up to read.
ReplyDeleteNicely articulated Kelsey - I love that you have embraced the essence of literature.
ReplyDeleteMany of you have many thoughts about literature - great to see the value of it. For our purposes, aim toward a singular and focused statement about the study of literature. Something that truly represents how you value it.
BY Pieter
ReplyDeleteThesis- Literature is a an essential subject to be taught in school because literature gives students a subject to express their selves in, it teaches us lessons about life, and expands are ability to analyze situations and predict for the future
Literature is taught in school to educate students on how to analyze stories so they may gain a better understanding of how a story is built and why.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michael. We communicate with literature. If literature was not taught in school,we would not be able to communicate with the world as well. Literature is universal, everyone reads and writes. Also, literature is an essential part of culture. It is also a great way to express yourself.
ReplyDeleteLiterature is the road to knowledge, without it, we are lost. It gives us the ability to communicate intellectually, and express our opinions. Without the powerful voice to express thought, a man's opinion would never be heard. It allows humans to look at things from new perspectives and opens our mind to new methods of thinking. The study literature is most important because it connects us.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Pieter's thesis statement. It has many good opinions and ideas in it. The only problem, you have to remember, simple is better. The shorter it is, the more straight to the point and less verbose the thesis will be.
