Blog Assignment Nine

Last week we examined the hero archetype, with particular attention to the contributions of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. We studied Campbell's hero's journey, and then I asked you to chart the hero's journey in a movie from the AFI Top 100 films. At this point you should be not only understanding what the denotation for the hero archetype and the hero's journey but you are also able to see it in action (The Matrix) in the movie you selected. My question here runs a bit deeper.

Post 1: Please summarize your understanding of Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. What are the personal implications of Campbell’s theory? What are the global implications? DO YOU SENSE THE AWE?????

Post 2: Please respond to another classmate's post.

As always, post must evidence authenticity, reflection and original thought. Please spend some time with this one (20 points)

Blog Assignment Eight

Today you took a test in class. How'd that go for you?

I would like two posts:

Post 1: Please tell me what you learned from this experience. Relate both the positive and challenging aspects of your work style.

Post 2: How will this experience inform or change the way you've approached the work in this class?

Note: Again, these posts must be reflective and answer the prompt. This is not a forum for critique about the class, your classmates, or me. I really want to know about you.

Blog Assignment Seven

You have read several myths, presented your myths to the class, and listened to the presentations of others. So how was the experience of listening and presenting? Did you dig the myths?

I would like two strong, reflective posts.

Post 1
Describe for me the experience of reading and retelling the myth. How did you feel about passing on these ancient stories? Did presenting give you any insights into the nature of myth itself?

Post 2
What was your experience in listening to the various presentations of your peers? Please do not use this opportunity to disparage your classmates by name, rather refer to why some of them were less engaging than others. Please do use this posting to say what you did enjoy about the myths. Did listening provide you with any real realizations or aha moments about why mythology is so enduring?

Blog Assignment Six

Today we began our presentation of the deities and their archetypes. Sooooooooooooooo
Any revelations? Tell me what strikes you about the way the Greeks looked at the experience of being human. What do these archetypes say about humanity? How hard is a thesis?

Only one post please but make sure it is insightful and reflective.

Blog Assignment Five

This week we examined the history and purpose of mythology. To emphasize the enduring effects of Greece upon Western civilization and culture, we look at where it appears today, even in American pop culture.

Post One: I told you to reflect on mythology as a metaphor. Select one way in which mythology is "Something else." What countless facets of life do these engaging stories represent? Explain your answer in detail.

Post Two: What have you personally learned from our introduction to mythology? What surprised you, awed you, interested you, etc. Do you have any questions? Are these ideas at odds with any of your own spiritual beliefs?

Blog Assignment Four

We have spent the last few weeks reviewing and evolving our definition of the essay. I'm sure you have some thoughts about this process.

I would like two posts. In the first:
Please tell me at least one valuable lesson you have learned so far that was not clear before. Please also tell me what aspect of the essay you will focus on for this year. Finally, relate at least one feature of the essay that remains sketchy or unclear. Do you feel this was valuable?

In the second:
Respond to the post of another student, either attempt to clarify that student's questions (yep, give it a shot) or relate to something that student has said regarding the essay.

Blog Assignment Three

For several days, we have viewed the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men. In the film, 11 jurors are convinced that the defendant is guilty; one man is convinced of his innocence. While the evidence appears overwhelmingly against the accused teenager, this one man is able to use the same evidence to steer the others to his way of thinking.

I would like two separate posts.

In the first:
Consider this film, and a court case in particular, a metaphor for the essay itself. Consider the argument. Reflect on the evidence, its meaning, and the explanations that accompanied it. What, if anything, did this film teach you about your argument (thesis) and your use of your own evidence (quotes). How can this information help you with your essay in general, and your Say/Mean/Matter more specifically? Please answer in full

In the second post:
I would love to know what you thought of the film. Give me YOUR OPINION (yikes).

Blog Assignment Two

Today we undertook a rather nontraditional exercise Our texting activity was designed to help you understand and develop a thesis statement. Tell me the results. Did the activity offer you any new insights? What kind of insights? Did you enjoy the activity? How do you think it can be improved? Please feel free to offer any additional observations or questions.

Once again I'd like you to respond twice minimum. That means two separate posts (as opposed to one big blob of an entry. Please answer the question in full, with reflection and authenticity.

Blog Assignment One

Today I asked you about the importance of literature in and beyond the classroom. You had a chance to reflect on that question in your journals. Then we discussed our reflections in class. Here I would like you to devise a thesis statement about why the study of literature is important.

Please, please, please take some intellectual risk here. Do not restate our conversation today, do not be obvious, do not copy the submissions of others. BE YOU. This thesis should reflect what YOU think.

Remember: you will write two entries (as opposed to one big blob). One is your thesis, the other is your thoughts on a classmate's thesis. Casual register applies.
