You have read several myths, presented your myths to the class, and listened to the presentations of others. So how was the experience of listening and presenting? Did you dig the myths?
I would like two strong, reflective posts.
Post 1
Describe for me the experience of reading and retelling the myth. How did you feel about passing on these ancient stories? Did presenting give you any insights into the nature of myth itself?
Post 2
What was your experience in listening to the various presentations of your peers? Please do not use this opportunity to disparage your classmates by name, rather refer to why some of them were less engaging than others. Please do use this posting to say what you did enjoy about the myths. Did listening provide you with any real realizations or aha moments about why mythology is so enduring?

While we present I become so nervous that I stop thinking and speak from memory while still trying to put the myth into a more fluid format. I feel that we should read the myths in their original wording and then translate it in our minds because when we do that it becomes easier for members of our culture to understand the mindset of the one telling the myth.
ReplyDeleteHearing the other groups tell the myths, it seemed that, while they did know what the myths represented, they did not know the myth itself. That made the presentation appear to lose focus. However, I did enjoy how the people presenting told the myths with their own personal touch. Long before this class I realized mythology will never disappaer because no matter what culture one is from one will relate to the events and characters in the myths.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading the myths, they were entertaining and I'm starting to see how the "web of gems" relates now. It's amazing how all humans share similar experiences and how we all feel the same emotions of love, hate, anger, sadness, etc. In our first presentation, it was a little difficult to retell the myths, but my group will do better on Monday.
I liked listening to everyone's myths, although some were more entertaining than others. But everyone had a great story to tell and some of the stories that were presented were similar to the stories that my group had. I realized that myths are more than just entertainment, but that they are lessons and shared experiences and emotions that we all go through.
Reading and presenting myths have been what I think to be the best way to learn them. Actually telling them and creating such an interest in them causes our minds to look at the stories from a perspective that makes it seem like we're not learning, but simply hearing a story. I now have a more detailed view on these myths.
ReplyDeleteHearing myths from other groups has done the same thing for me. I get to hear the details of the story without having to think about working, but just sitting back and listening. Sure sometimes people don't have a lot of enthusiasm when they speak or might not know the information that well, but that is normal because we obviously not perfect, and I still can follow the story and the 4 archetypes with no problem.
The myths were entertaining to read. Retelling them was somewhat of a challenge since it was difficult to think of ways on how to tell the story with the same flair that strook me when I read it. Once I know the story by heart, it is not difficult at all to share it. Since in some way I am able to relate to the stories, they have grown on me. Now, I think myths were not only used to entertain the greeks, but they truly did answer life's unknown questions. In some way, they make sense.
ReplyDeleteHearing myths is more entertaining if the people presenting tell the story and not read it. It is more engaging and I feel like I believe the story even more, since I have the attention span of a little kid. I understand when people do not present them enthusiastically because it is difficult to stand and present in front of people. Since I could relate to all the stories, I realize now that myths will last forever. The themes repeat, and relate to people, and that is what keeps them alive.

ReplyDeleteBeing able to read more myths makes me see how all the myths relate to human behavior and emotions. I agree with michelle that when reading the story it seems so exciting and different that when telling it I want to make sure to have the same ability in telling the myth so well. Presenting the myth allowed me to hear the story aloud, which made me see how much I can relate to the story.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the presentations because I got to hear more myths and see how even though they have different points of view on love they all relate to humans. It is more entertaining to be hearing the story then having someone read it to me since it keeps me captivated.
Reading the myths was fun,but re telling them was difficult. I don't think we had enough time to prepare for the presentation. I felt that it was important to tell the stories we read so that everyone got to see how the myths are so similar yet so different. The presentation showed me how verbalizing the myth in a story telling way was much more interesting and engaging than just summarizing it. I think that just summarizing the myths would have taken away from the story itself.
ReplyDeleteI liked just listening to the stories. I took out a lot of the thinking and made understanding the myths easier. What we need to work on is telling the story with more enthusiasm and keep our stories flowing without breaking to remember. We also need to work on understanding Joseph Campbell's Four Imperatives. By listening we are able to visualize the stories and see ourselves in those positions, and see how we all react and see things so similarly.
ReplyDeleteReading the myths was fun as I was able to gain new knowledge about Greek society and how everything that happened back then relates to everything now, which is like the web of gems. Retelling the myths is somewhat difficult, but people have to be good storytellers and know the facts to make a story good. Presenting the myths helps the storyteller gain more knowledge about the myth as they must read it over and over again to get the facts right, and by doing this, people can more insights about the truths of myths.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the myths as I was able to learn new things and learn how closely related modern society and Greek society was. Some myths were more interesting than others as some people tell the story great and they know what they are talking about when it came to presenting the mystical, pedagogical, sociological, and cosmological. Listening to the myths, I learned also about how weird Greek society was as there were killer lambs and dogs that ripped their owners to shreds. Overall, myths have provided me with an enhanced learning of why our society is what it is today.
ReplyDeleteReading the myths was wonderful and I loved the stories. They make you think about life and the many unexplained things today, but presenting is not my strong suit. I didn't say much, although I contributed to what we said when we prepared. Passing on stories is also enjoyable for me, but I'd prefer to write them down. Telling the story aloud does make us listen for a second time and it does give us a deeper understanding of the story we recently read, but I mainly noticed that all the myths are so similar because they all try to explain how something is or came to be.
ReplyDeleteMy experience towards listening to my peers is that I was extremly interested in the myths, but i'm not quite sure whether or not they were. Anyway that's basically my criticisim and students can't help whether or not they like the myths, but they could try being more enthusiastic. The one thing i realized which wasn't really an aha moment was that the stories explain the unexplained or the miraculous and that is why I think myths are so enduring because people seek answers no matter where they find them.
ReplyDeleteThe myths I read were very entertaing and suspenseful. I am so able to relate these stories and how they connect every person on earth together. After reading the stories I get so moved by them that I want to tell others in the class about it. I want to tell the story in a way so that they could feel the same way about the story. It felt good to retell the story because it felt as if I was passing on the story to more people, contributing to the spread of mythology. I think that people are so affected by the stories of mythology that it is inevitable that more people will be told these stories.
ReplyDeleteI think listening to the stories are so much better than being able to tell them. Watching the class tell these classic myths made me feel like a little kid again listening to my mom read me nursery rhymes. Hearing these stories told and read by the class makes me realize why they are so enduring: we are the stories. These classic tales are stories about us, and about who we are. We all connect with the stories because we are basically the characters of them. Every person in the world can see themselves in one myth that they are deeply affected by.
ReplyDeleteI thought that reading the myths were fun and also exciting to find out what happens to the Gods. Re- telling the myths was even harder. I would forget them and sometimes have to refer back to my paper. Also the hardest part was not reading them word for word but summarizing them and making them shorter.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed listening to the other stories and most of my fellow classmates also told the stories well. I was excited to hear the other stories and looked foward to them later in the day. The hardest part to understand were the sociological and the pedagogical. Also most of the groups had copious ammounts of enthusiasm and that made the stories even more exciting and fun to hear
ReplyDeleteI was amazed by the myths that we have read in the past few days. Each myth was different from each other and they never bored me. By having to retell the story, I had to know the myth, so I took time to study and understand them. When presenting, I learned that the myths would be different from the original version. I noticed that we cannot recite the same exact words from memory and may miss some topics. These few changes can make a myth different from its original.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed listening to the presentations of myths. Some people were great storytellers and it helped me to concentrate on their myths. By listening to myths, I realized that every single myth had something to explain. It made me realize even more that the Greek taught the unexplainable through stories. I enjoy that there is something that everyone can connect to with myths.
ReplyDeletereading and retelling the myths was an enjoyable experience because it gives us a chance to really show how we feel about the myth and sort of put our own little spin on the myth, so to speak. retelling the myth is somewhat challenging because it is neccessary to remember all of the different people in the myth and what they do. it is easy to get the gods mixed up when retelling the myth. other than that, it is interesting to be able to share stories that were the first ones around.
ReplyDeletelistening to people telling the myths made them more interesting. it is easier to listen to people retell these myths in my casual language that use every day, then is is to read it in the original form. i think that it helps me gain a better understanding for the myth. when people find ways to make the stories funny and entertaining, it is much more gripping and i give the presenters my full attention.
ReplyDeleteI thought that reading the myths was interesting because I learned more about each of the gods and about their stories. Retelling the myths was a little hard because it was important to tell the most important things so that everyone could understand what the story was about, and not leave out small details that were important to the story. I do think that presenting the stories gave me insight about the myths because each of the myths had a different outcome and ending, but they all told different aspects of a topic such as love. Whether it was a good or bad ending, the characters showed how love can affect one's life by helping or hurting the person.
ReplyDeleteWhen we first began the Greek mythology/story-telling presentations, I would focus too hard on the information of the story. I did not want to leave anything out of them, but at the same time I was not able to enjoy them. After presenting the first stories, however, I realized that presenting stories is easier and more understandable when I enjoy it. When I take pleasure in telling the myths, the story seems to flow better and passing it on to the class is more delightful. I think I am still in need of extra story-telling practice though in order to truly experience the nature of myth.
ReplyDeleteIn class, it is interesting and entertaining to watch and listen to my peers' presentations. When other students retell the stories it is easier for me to understand them. Having them explain what the four imperatives are of the myths is a huge help in understanding the stories. The groups that are the most amusing are the groups that have every member involved with the storyteling rather than just one or two members. Also, it is more effective when the groups think of creative ways to present their stories, such as pretending to be one of the characters in the myth.
ReplyDeleteI thought that listening to the myths was fun because each group had a different way of telling their myths, and all of the myths were fascinating. I think that the groups could gain more interest by the audience if they do not read off their paper, and instead try to tell the myth in their own words as best they can. Listening to these myths helped me realize that myths have endured today because everyone can relate to the stories. These stories endured because the gods were more humans than humans themselves, thus humans see the faults of the gods and apply the morals to their own lives.
ReplyDeleteI thought reading the myths to the class was fun. It was interesting to learn about all of the different myths and how we all share the same emotions. It was somewhat difficult to read the story in a way everyone can understand and relate to instead of reading from the paper. Thinking about the four imperatives aside from focusing on the presentations also helped open my eyes and dig deeper in the meanings of the myths and how it relates us and connects us all as one.
ReplyDeleteListening to everyone present their myths was entertaining and fun. It was not about the acting but the enthusiasm each group had in telling their story. Listening to each story helped me realize more of the "matter" in each myth as well. I think if someone told the story without reading off the paper, it makes it more interesting and would grab the audience's attention. Listening also helped me see from different points of view and how we all shares the same connections, values, and life lessons.
ReplyDeleteReading the myths helps you begin to understand them. Going over the myths a couple of times helps bring out the underlying message. Retelling the myths makes your understanding of them even better. All these steps and the group discussions are the best way to fully understand the myths. I also think passing on the myths is fun because you get to tell it in your own way.
ReplyDeleteI thought some presentations were stronger than others. Some people needed to relax more while presenting, it would have helped the presentations go for ok to great. Also, I think people needed to stress more of the main points of the myth not just the little details. Listening to the presentations also helped me understand the myths.
ReplyDeleteHearing the myths told from another person was much better than reading them out of a book. A great story teller can really bring one to life. Of course, a bad story teller can put someone to sleep. And also, telling a story enables you to integrate some of your own interpretation into it.
ReplyDeletei think by retelling the myths it helped connect us more to the mystical because not only did we did we know about them but we had to renact them which made us know how it felt because we were actually doing that
ReplyDeletei found that some groups that acted it out to be more interesting to watch because we got a visual to relate it to rather than just listening to what happened and having to picture it myself
I have to be honest, I didn't really get the feel of the stories told from the groups, even our own. But some were definitely stronger than others. I think that if the storyteller gets into the myth, then the audience will as well, which I think was part of the problem. The more the person got into it, the better I liked the story.
ReplyDeleteI felt that while our group was telling the stories, we were doing a great job retelling the stories, but sometimes it felt like we lost focus on what the main idea was. Also I felt that while I was speaking that I would start to get nervous and start saying the wrong things.
ReplyDeleteWhen hearing other groups present their myths, I started to get some ideas on how maybe our group should have presented. I liked when the story tellers would get more involved with the story, like when one person was pretending he was Apollo. Being a more involved story teller makes a more interesting story.
ReplyDeleteOur group needed to dig into the matter more. The stories were interesting but it was hard to get the deep meaning, so thats what we need to work on the most. We also needed to present the story in a more exciting way I liked reading the stories that we had because it was interesting to see the many faces of love and all of the different things that happened with myth.
ReplyDeleteI think that listening to other people telling the stories is one of the best ways to hear things out and it helped me to be more precise and simple with the things i want to say. Sometimes i tried to sound too smart instead of just going with what was simple it helped to hear other groups tell us we had to be more simple and hearing simple responses because its so much more clear to me now. Also hearing other peoples responses made the pedigogical, mystical, sociological, and cosmological more clear and easy.
