Today we began our presentation of the deities and their archetypes. Sooooooooooooooo
Any revelations? Tell me what strikes you about the way the Greeks looked at the experience of being human. What do these archetypes say about humanity? How hard is a thesis?
Only one post please but make sure it is insightful and reflective.

What our presentations show is the God's way of life, who were "more human than human". Mythology was made up by another person which means that they looked and the humans act and interact. Mythology is a clear picture of human characteristics from another perspective. We're able to see and reflect on different aspects of human nature and how we can find different examples in our culture which helps us relate to our presentations more.
ReplyDeleteI think the Greeks set the standard for how humans are today. Although people are not as extreme as the gods, it is easy to see glimpses of humanity within them. They portray the balance of opposites using two unlike extremities. Humanity is two sided although a person maybe nice and smiley, there will always be something the complete opposite to balance that out although you may not see it. Come to think about it writing a thesis is not hard at all, just need to think about it a little bit.
ReplyDeleteOne revelation that I have had from the presentations today is that seeking revenge is a common charicteristic for the magority of the deities. What I noticed from the few stories that I have read is that the gods saw human experiences as their form of entertainment. The archetypes of the gods show us what we need from life and teach us lessons so that we may overcome hardships. A thesis comes easily if you use your original instinct, but the longer you ponder it, the more hard it becomes. The depth of the question determines whether or not the thesis is hard to think up.
ReplyDeleteWith the stories I've heard, it strikes me how bruital and aggressive the greek gods/goddesses were. It seems like there is always death/blood invovled in every story. No matter how general the architypes appear, they are true. The stories really are about humans, though maybe the emotion is not as intense compared to the gods/goddesses. I think that there is piece of every single god/goddess within each person, and this might be why they are more human than human, since their focus is on specific traits. Writing a thesis to fit humanity is both hard and easy to do. It is hard since words must be chosen right to make the thesis not too broad or specific. It is easy since what the gods/goddesses represent is relatable.

ReplyDeleteMaking up for your past silence with incredible insight and reflection. Wow! Love that you see the humanity beneath the immortals. Yeah, isn't it weird how the gods are so human? Isn't it curious how they appear apparently randomly into the lives of mortals? I mean what up with that?
Pieter, well said,
ReplyDeleteMichelle, spot on, they are the stories of us - our immortals tell the tales of mortals.
The greeks looked at their gods as humans. they saw their gods with flaws like humans. The gods explain why each human is so different by showing us the personality of each god relating to their domain. for example like Ares(the god of bloody war) many fighters and bloodthirsty soldiers are arrogant and prideful. though the gods are immortal they seem to cary many human qualities.
ReplyDeleteAn aspect of the deities' archetypes that I found very interesting was that each archetype possesses certain characteristics that contradict one another. I never realized that the human identity is not just one feature. It always consists of traits that balance out. The archetypes reveal how no one, not even a god, is single-sided. Creating a thesis was challenging, but after I heard the thesis statements of other groups and listened to the feedback, I think I am beginning to understand what one is supposed to explain.
ReplyDeleteThe stories show careful observation of human behavior. The gods and goddesses in the story have human emotions. I was suprised how most of the human emotions protrayed in the stories were ones that people dislike. However these personalities are common in every human being. People would feel anger and vengeful at times. I think the Greek chose those personalities because they affect people the most. The archetypes show personalities of an individual character. It shows how a different character would react to a situation. It would be easy to write a theis if you understood the characteristic of the god or goddess.
ReplyDeleteThe main thing that strikes me about that we went over today was that all deities have more than one personality (e.g. Hera, vengeful and motherly, Zeus, who sleeps around but is supposed to set an example for everyone else). This teaches that no human identity can exist with just one characteristic. Every single being is full of traits, some that maybe even contradict others, and it is what makes thatvperson human. I don't believe that it is necessarily hard to come up with a thesis, it just requires deep thought and analysis.
ReplyDeleteWhat I have noticed about these Greek gods is that they are similar to humans, but with exaggerated personality traits. Hera is vengeful and jealous, while Hermes is comical and deceitful. These qualities that are seen in the gods completely unique to each one of them show how human they actually are. To me, making a thesis is hard and I have trouble "Keeping it simple," but after listening to an incredible amount of feedback in the class, I think making a thesis might be easier in the future.
ReplyDeletethe stories about the greek gods have showed me that most stories and movies in our life are based on greek mythology. the greek gods were just like normal people because they all had the same problems that people do now. the thesis for our mythology was challenging, but they further show how the greek gods are just like people today. the thesis reflects how greek gods are like all humans because they are based on feelings, such as revenge, that all people feel. it is especially challenging to keep the thesis universal because i naturally want to use words that relate to my god, but that would make the thesis too narrow.
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me about the Gods and Goddesses is that they experienced such strong human emotion. The emotions depicted in the stories reveal the humanity and flaws of the Gods and Goddesses, rather than portray them as perfect, almighty creatures. The stories show that the Gods felt regular human emotions, just more extremely than us humans. For example, today we learned that jealousy drove Hera to curse Hercules with "temporary madness," which drove him to kill his family. The archetypes show that the Gods were not one-sided. Instead, they were similar to humans: complex and conflicted. I believe that writing a thesis may be difficult only because we must stick to the subject, but make it universal too.
ReplyDeleteThe thing that strikes me most about gods/goddesses is the fact that they can be the god/goddess of one trait and then another of a different trait that is almost opposite. I think that traits have to do with the opinions of people and if someone does something everyone is going to have something to say about it. Sometimes people see the good side, but other times they see the bad. I think that these archetypes show humanity that they will never reach perfection. How are they possibly supposed to reach it if the god/goddess they look up too is full of imperfections? In my opinion, I also see this as part of the reason that normal people are able to relate to gods/goddesses and it shows them that they are not alone. These imperfections are what teach humanity lessons based on experience. Writing a thesis for this topic is difficult because it is hard to capture the complete essents of a single god/goddess.
ReplyDeleteFrom learning more about the gods today, I was able to see how complex they are. I think it is interesting how the gods were more human than humans because one would think that gods should be perfect in all aspects to achieve this rank. These archetypes show that humanity has learned from the actions of the gods and taken their mistakes into account. This is important because many people look up to gods as beholders of power, luck, and knowledge, and yet still realize that the gods have faults too. I think that formulating a thesis is hard at first, but once you dig down deep and highlight what it is that you are trying to say, you can slowly piece together your thoughts for this thesis.
ReplyDeleteIn my oppinion, the Gods treasured the opportunity to be human. Being human was a gift and many people today seem to not take advantage of what they have. I also noticed a number of similarities between the Gods and humans. When we were talking in class how everybody has gone through the same things, we really mean everybody, even the all powerful Gods. Writing a thesis is actually easy but we just overthink it and make it more complex than it needs to be.
ReplyDeleteWhat strikes me the most about the Greek gods/ goddesses is that all of the gods/ goddesses were building blocks for many different activities today. The gods are represented in many books, stories and even store names. For example the Shining was based on Herculeus and his family and Nike takes their symbol from the god Hermes. Also writing a thesis is a little difficult.
ReplyDeleteThe ways the Greek Gods and Goddesses looked at life is similar to the way humans look at modern day life. The Greek Gods and Goddesses had emotions and felt like humans do. They are born with all feelings, but it just depends on how they use it or if they use it. They had imperfectiions like us humans, which makes it easier for us to relate to the Gods and Goddesses. Gods and Goddesses have split personalities, which makes it hard to tell what they are feeling. Humans can be like that is some sense, as some people have split personalities. Writing a thesis is not that hard, as it should be easy as long as it is universal and has an abstract noun. Writing a thesis just requires a little critical thinking.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how different everyone is, we've all been through similar emotions, which brings us to common grounds connecting us as humans. The Greek Gods are so human like and down to earth. I did not expect that because when I think of the word "god" it brings to mind a perfect type of figure. The Gods were not perfect, which makes them even more like humans, everyone has their own imperfections, but also have something that they are good at as well. These archetypes show the different sides of emotion and character that humans can all relate to. Writing the thesis this time was difficult because you have to focus on the domain of the deity as well as make it universal.

ReplyDeleteWhat I found most interesting was the gods had such complex personalitites. They each had good and bad in them. That's like the real world. Everybody has a good and bad side; that's what makes life interesting. The thesis wasn't too hard. Everyone had a good thesis. Some were too narrow or were not universal.
I'm finally starting to make stronger thesis's easier. I learned that the Greeks had these gods so that they can relate to somebody. If you have someone as powerful as a god having problems or unique traits that you see in yourself, then that person doesn't feel alone. And it's true, we are all human beings, and we all face the same problems.
